I uploaded my first "website" in 1997. It was actually a web page (my account page on www.indigo.ie) just after Netscape had just made things easier with website browsing!
A few weeks after the launch, I knew I was onto something when I received a spectacular RFQ. I quoted my usual price of £80 but told the lady that I had to charge £3,000 to cover the airfare from Dublin to Dallas, Texas and back :) There was no Google localisation in them days.
My first customer website was launched 10/1/1998 and consisted of 17 madly named htm web pages and 45 image files, no home page text or keywords! It always amused the client whenever he received an enquiry from places like Japan! There was no SEO in them days either!
In Dec 1996 there were 36 million Internet users while in Dec 2009 there were 1.8 billion and in all that time I have been uploading websites for SME's and changing with the technology. In December 2005 I uploaded my own Joomla CMS powered site. Unfortunately my rather cleverly named domain bore no resemblance to the services that I offered. This forced me down the road of search engine optimisation. This website has been in the top three spots in Google for the last 3 years.
Every small business can now afford a website. It is the most cost effective marketing tool that you could ever employ. It works 24/7 and soon you will be wondering how did you ever do without one.
